Coppelia NYC- 24/7 Latin Diner in the West Village

Coppelia (same owners as Yerba Buena) is right near my apartment and it’s one of my favorite neighborhood spots! The food is great, the atmosphere is cozy and the prices are awesome! Last night I had the Chicharron Chopped salad which came with roasted pork, fried egg, avocado, and ble cheese. The salad is so big and at $10.95 what a deal for dinner! I’ve also had the grilled skirt steak ($18.95) and burger with roasted pork and fried ($8.95!!).

I wouldn’t go there for a special occasion meal (because of the diner-like setting) but if you’re in the west village and looking for great food that’s reasonably priced, it’s a winner!

Coppelia, 207 W. 14th St. @ 7th Avenue

Empellon, West Village Mexican

Last night I visited the new restaurant Empellon in the west village (they took over the old Chow Bar space). The atmosphere was nice and the food was good, but nothing memorable. I ordered guacamole for the table. The guacamole was a litlle bland, but I did like the sauces it came with. I also ordered steak tacos, and a friend had the scallop tacos. The portions were not so great- around $24 for three steak tacos, with small pieces of meat (and $28 for the scallops), and they came with no sides. Overall, it was a decent meal, but I am not running to go back.

Moustache Pitza, West Village

It’s really hard to find good Middle Eastern food in the city, but Moustache Pitza is a cozy Middle Eastern restaurant in the west village that did not dissapoint! The hummus, lamb, and chicken were all scrumptios! And for around $11/plate for geneous portions, I will definitely be coming back.

I just got back from a 10 day trip to Spain (tanned, happy, and inevitably a couple pounds heavier!), visiting Asturias, Madrid, Seville, and Granada. The trip was great and the food was unique and tasty! I’m trying to get back into my daily routine after a trip full of eating, drinking and siestas! My favorite cities were Madrid and Seville (despite the 100+ degree temperatures in Seville)! It’s such a fantastic experience and such a great culture. The lifestyle is different- people drinking wine for lunch and eating really late (everything shuts down for hours during the day). The bullfighting was interesting as well- I watched it on television, but probably not something I’d want to see in-person due to all the blood (so much!).

I found myself comparing the trip to Argentina, asking myself which country I preferred. Overall, I found the food better in Argentina (I loved all the beef!) but the cities in Spain were nicer. Perhaps part of it is because everything was so cheap in Argentina that we were able to splurge on a really high-end dinner every night. Regardless, the food was amazing (the churros, jamon y queso, and paella were some highlights), and I highly recommend the trip. For this trip, I would suggest doing research in advance (I did mine on chowhound.com), as many of the tourist restaurants were overpriced and not good, and we were able to find some real gems.

Now.. back to seafood and veggies this week to get back in wedding shape!

Fantastic Dessert Spot: Peels

Looking for a great spot for a sweet brunch or dessert this week? Visit Peels in the East Village.

Peels is owned by Freemans and is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth. It’s a southern spot with cute decor and is a great spot for Sunday brunch.

This was the perfect way for me to start my day this morning. Despite the rain lately and gray sky this morning, this gave the the feeling that summer is right around the corner.

I’m heading to Seville, Granada and Madrid this May… If anyone has any suggestions on what to do, or where to get tapas, let me know!!
I usually rely on Chowhound when traveling (better than Tripadvisor, in my opinion…). Send me your recommendations!!!

Dining highlights from Argentina!

Every restaurant we went to was unique in a different way. Some more for their food, and others more for their wine and decor. They were all so different and fantastic!

Thanksgiving Dinner in Barlioche, Argentina!

Last night, John and I enjoyed an amazing restaurant experience at Cassis, in Bariloche. The meal was incredible from start to finish. We met the owner, Ernesto, who brought us into his wine cellar to choose the perfect Patagonian wine (we chose a Pinot Noir). There were two menu options, each with 4 courses. We each chose a different menu. They first brought us warm breads made in-house, and an amouse-bouche – a small carrot soup with ginger and olive oil. Then we had our favorite dish, chicken liver pâté flambé (with cognac). It was not on my menu, but I asked for it to replace another appetizer. It was to die for! I also had a delicious vegetable pastry appetizer and local fresh water trout with crispy skin. It was delicious from start to finish!
